PUP.Optional.InstallCore virus (Removal Guide)
Threat Level: Low-Medium Risk
What is PUP.Optional.InstallCore?
PUP.Optional.InstallCore is a specific detection used by Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software and other Antivirus products to indicate and detect a Potentially Unwanted Program or PUP for short.
A potentially unwanted program, also referred to as an application is an item that contains adware, suspected spyware, installs or updates toolbars, or basically has other unclear objectives. The particular PUP.Optional.InstallCore Malwarebytes detection is associated with an advertisement supported cross-browser browser hijacker and spyware program that attaches to Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft IE as a browser add-on, extension, and helper object (BHO). This item may also be used to automatically install or update third-party malware without direct user permission.
PUP.Optional.InstallCore is not technically a computer virus; however, the program has been documented by reputable third-parties to exhibit malicious traits, such as rootkit capabilities that hook deep into an operating system, hijacking the home page and default search engine of popular internet browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Internet Explorer, and overall just interfering with the general user experience and computer functionality.
PUP.Optional.InstallCore is an advertisement-supported cross web browser add-on, browser helper object (BHO), extension, plugin for popular internet browsers. The browser extension includes various features that will modify the default, managed, provided, and/or custom settings of the browser including the home page, search settings, and in some cases the item will modify Internet Explorer’s load time threshold, place a lock file within Firefox to prevent third-party competitor software from changing its settings, as well as disable the internet browser’s Content Security Policy in order to allow for cross site scripting of the plugin.
Removing third-party items such as Search Protect by conduit and Delta Toolbar often repairs internet browser settings and stops unwanted advertisements from appearing if the additional item is not present.
PUP.Optional.InstallCore and similar malware raise concerns relating to the invasion of privacy and privacy crimes. If PUP.Optional.InstallCore is detected on your computer system and your internet browser is redirecting to unwanted websites or you are experiencing unwanted pop-up advertisements, the potentially malicious add-on and extension (as well as associated third-party spyware) may collect and distribute sensitive user information, including information users manually submit into online forms such as your name, user name, passwords, email address, telephone number, home address, geographical location, personally identifiable information, non-personal identifiable information (anonymous data), and more.
PUP.Optional.InstallCore may even collect information when you uninstall the toolbar and place additional tracking cookies on the affected computer.
Users have reported that PUP.Optional.InstallCore and similar items are the cause of unwanted email spam and junk mail. In particular, victims have complained that they have received email spam relative to their internet browsing activity.
Other user reports indicate that PUP.Optional.InstallCore is difficult to remove or won’t simply remove after a scan. If this is the case it is recommended to uninstall and remove any suspicious software and browser add-ons, extensions, and plugins.
PUP.Optional.InstallCore and similar unwanted programs often bundle with third-party freeware and shareware. If you recently installed software from websites including download.com and others, chances are PUP.Optional.InstallCore and similar items downloaded and installed as well without your consent.
PUP.Optional.InstallCore may also be found in suspicious advertisements, torrents, and other locations around the web; however, PUP.Optional.InstallCore software primarily bundles with software developers and distributors of freeware and shareware.
It is recommended to remove this potentially unwanted program from your computer if it was detected in a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware quick, full, or flash scan by most security experts.
